We had asked for ten minutes. Our children had practised for weeks — a short performance for the Republic Day programme at a local ground.
To my shock and dismay, we were refused the slot. The reason given was vague enough to be unarguable and clear enough to be understood.
So we held our own. We set out chairs in our courtyard, invited every family, and our children performed to an audience that had never once doubted they belonged on a stage. It remains one of the proudest afternoons in our history.
